“All I was coming here for was to have a country.
I thought if I went to Australia, I would find a country with respect for human rights.
I was thinking to leave darkness for light, but what I find is that I have left darkness for even more darkness.”
- H.A., a Bidun from Dubai
My last drawing based on my memories of the trip to the Manus Island detention centre that I took with work in November 2013.
This is P Dorm, where 112 men sleep each night in a long, low, tin-roofed WWII dormitory with no windows, no ventilation and only two working fans. The stench was horrendous and the heat and humidity was stifling.
Some of these men have been sleeping in these conditions for 7 months. This facility is run by the Australian government.
